ISSUE #1b
even when i saw all these zines being produced by kids
everywhere, i never thought i would do it myself. i
didn't think i had the motivation or time or reason to
do one. and then i started seeing a lot of awful
zines. actually, i saw a lot of unoriginal zines: the
same boring gamut of straightedge or vegan or punk
zines. and i said, "hey, i can p robably do a better
job than that." and hey, now i have something else to
do during what's left of this summer. and so here i
am. i apologize if you think this sucks. thanks. :)
love you, Mikey

"TrEnDy" by Yum Yum Tree
Okay, okay, so the vocalist for this band doesn't have much
of a singing voice. But this stuff rocks! Call me nuts, but I
think this stuff is pretty danceable... It's reminiscent of the
great Bikini Kill. It's about time New York City brought us a
decent band...
"weaponry listens to love" by Huggy Bear
There are so few political punk bands around nowadays, and
not only does Huggy Bear deliver, but does it with their own style.
The songs on this album varies from the seductive "why i'm a
lawbreaker" to the raging "fuck yr heart." Sonic orgasm...
"King" by Belly
Don't expect this album to sound like Belly's first album.
I meant that in a good way... There isn't too much of Tanya's ol'
"baby-voice" thing going on here; the vocals are a lot more fuller
and the songs are much heavier. There's still a lot of Belly
originality here, separating them from all that mindless alterno-
grunge crap the radio stations play these days.
"Big Choice" by Face to Face
See if you can count how many times the guys says the word
"try" on this album... Anyway, I liked this album overall. I just
wished they could vary their sound a bit. I think their first
album was a bit more original than this one but I'm a sucker when
it comes to fast, catchy pop-punk bands. I love the drums and
bass; they know how to play fast and keep a dance-able rhythm
going. It's hard to not get hooked on songs such as "Struggle,"
"Sensible," and "Promises," even if Trevor says the word "try" a
million times...
"This One's Better EP" by i farm
Aw shit I love this band. Seven fast-as-hell, fun, short,
catchy songs. Did I mention fast? Songs about love, killing
dolphins, and your choad. This is as good as white trash ivy
league punkrock gets, kids!
"Fist City" by Tribe 8
How many lesbian punkrock bands know how to punkrock like
Tribe 8? Here they bring you songs about sexual violence, (frat
boy) castration, non-monogamy, and all that other good stuff. And
I like the Aretha Franklin cover they do. Some people criticize
this band as being too serious and angry, as if there was something
wrong with that. Sheesh!
"University" by Throwing Muses
This is definitely the best Throwing Muses effort to date.
The music and the lyrics are very mature and honestly reflect
Kristen Hirsh's unique talent. From songs like "Snakeface" to
driving pop songs like "Bright Yellow Gun," this album rocks.
"World Tour and Other Destinations" by Tsunami
This is a compilation of previously released singles/EP's by
Tsunami. One noteable thing about this band is their one-of-a-kind
sound and songwriting. The variety of stuff on this CD is
welcoming. From typically mellow songs to poppy songs, this is 22
tracks of glorious indierock worth your smelly money.
"Blonder and Blonder" by the Muffs
The Muffs. Now THIS is pop-punk. The song are short,
catchy as hell and addictive. This is adrenaline pump for your
average NOFX-listening kid. And wow, I've never heard anyone
scream like Kim either... Loud guitars and screams mix so well in
this momentous pop album.
"The Stars Are Insane" by Versus
It's all about indierock. Soothing, melodic, powerful,
beautiful,... This band has talent.
"ear of the dragon: 19 asian-american bands" V/A
This is the first ever compilation of rock bands with asian-
american members. Some punk, some indierock, ska... A very good
collection and I hope this will provide some young asian-american
rockers out there with some inspiration if not role models in rock.
Artists I particulary liked here: Kicking Giant, J Church, Versus,
Cub, Azure, Squash Blossom, and Seam.
"Get the Willies" by the Willies
Joe Bates, the bassist, wrote to me saying that his band was not as
"hardcore" as my bands EXIT and PMS., as if my bands were hardcore.
Anyway, this is a very professional recording and all I can say is,
if you like the Ramones, you'll like the Willies. The singer
sometimes even sound likes the guy from the Ramones.
"Blondie: Platinum Collection"
I got this free from BMG and wow, how good is that? Blondie is so
fuckin' punkrock all you airwalk-sportin' chain-wearing new-school
kids will never understand. A great collection of songs (47 total)
that are on average about 2 1/2 minutes long, this is such good
music to dance to. And their drummer is damn good too.
"Bauhaus: 1979-1983 Volume One"
This was free from BMG too, but I think it was kind of a waste. I
mean, I respect Bauhaus for existing, but the songs on this ablum
are hard to get into. They're long and repetitive. If the songs
were shorter, then I'll definitely like this band. If I wanted to
go goth, I think I'll stick with the Cure or something, thank you.
"Seotaiji & Boys: IV" by Seotaiji & Boys
This band has gone through some serious changes. Their second
album was a weird mix of heavy metal and rap, and I thought that
was cool. Now this album is SO different. It's more groovier,
with more funk/jazz/rock, less dance, and more rap. I guess I can
say that some songs on this CD have a Beastie Boys and Cypris Hill
influence. But Seotaiji & Boys are definitely better than their
American counterparts. And their amazing originality sets them
apart from the rest of the Korean music scene.
Dahlia Seed / Garden Variety split: "Statement of Purpose / Parker"
I got this 7" at the GV show here at Cornell. I put the Dahlia
Seed side on my record player and it was love at first hearing.
It's rare that I like a song so much in the first listening, but
that's what it was. "Statement of Purpose" is just a perfect song,
and the singer has the coolest voice when she screams out the
chorus. The Garden Variety side is good too. They're a good cross
between pop-punk and indierock. I like their song on this 7" a
lot: reminds me of times when I felt a certain way. I dunno.
THE HOLY STRAIGHTEDGE JIHAD IS COMING!!!
ARE YOU READY TO FIGHT??
In the next we days we urge you to gather as much food (non-meat and non-
dairy of course) and as many weapons as possible. We must be prepared, we
shall overcome. Death to all druggies!
You fools may think my quest is a joke, but I tell you it is not. There
is only one truth. And that truth is you have killed and shall be judged.
Don't think you can hide it, I can smell the meat, drugs, and alcohol on
your breath. I can smell it in your farts. There is no escaping me, the
mighty vegan warrior and my army of vegan power killers. I will come and
tear the meat right out of your stomach and then feed it to you again. How
will you like that? I will shove beer so far up your ass it will come out of
your ears, will you like it? I will shove a bong straight up your nose and
it will come out of your eye sockets, it will be the high of your life. I am
sure you druggies will love it.
Those who are with me must act immediately. As XXX said, go to your local
burger king, and take no prisoners. There is no escaping the revolution.

The Unspoken
What a beautiful morning!
i always heard about feminism and the feminist movement, but
never bothered to stop and think about what it meant. and more
specifically, what it meant to me. it was last year in one of my
women's studies class that i really started to think about it.
there are so many ways that feminism can manifest itself in this
society: on the personal level, on the social level, on the
political level, etc. i can go on and on. but one must define
feminism, and if action is an inherent quality of feminism, then
there must be some sort of solidarity among people who identify
themselves as feminists. and a common, agreed-upon definition of
feminism is a fundamental step in forming such unification.
solidarity is important, and too many times, i think that those
who call themselves feminists are too narrow in their thinking;
their focus is too limited and specific. politically, this can
be regarded as an important tactic, because it focus all their
efforts into one goal, but in many ways it isolates certain
people. what i mean is that mainstream feminism is mostly a
white middle-class women's movement. and concerned mainly with
the issues that plague these women. but if they were to allow
people of other races, ethnicity, sex, or class to join their
movement, then their focus will be more "dispersed" and less
focused, because there will be so many different possibilities of
issues to be dealt with. example? look at NOW...
what use is fighting sex discrimination when in the movement
itself you allow class and race discrimination? sexist
oppression is created by the same patriarchy that perpetuates
racism, classism, homophobia, and male dominance. and if the
goal of feminists is to destroy this patriarchy, then ALL the
systems of oppression must be destroyed as well. okay, say that
finally sex discrimination has been eliminated: all the other
systems of oppression will still exist, and sooner or later, male
dominance will come again and patriarchy re-established.
i may not be presenting my argument as clearly as i want to, but
what i'm saying is that we must change the definition of feminism
to be more inclusive and to be more radical. the person whom
which i agree most with in these issues is bell hooks. in her
book, "feminist theory: from margin to center," she says,
"feminism is a struggle to end sexist oppression...to eradicate
the ideology of domination" (p.24). "individuals who fight for
the eradication of sexism without supporting struggles to end
racism or classism undermines their own effort" (p.39).
feminism is not a lifestyle and it's not an identity that people
should readily adopt. it must be an active STRUGGLE. whether in
everyday life where one individually encounters discrimination,
or on a political level, feminism must be active, constant, and a
struggle. feminism develops from individual experience as well
as a commonality of shared experiences (among others). it means
communicating with others. bell hooks says that feminism that
merely wants to "reform" the system is ineffective, and it may do
more harm than good. feminism has to be a RADICAL movement. i
mean, we are dealing such a powerful, conservative enemy called
the patriarchy, and if you want to make any changes, you have to
destroy it altogether. that means destroying racism, classism,
etc. as well as sexism. you must go "all out" or not do anything
at all. you make your choice: to be a feminist or not.
while i was reading bell hooks, the thing that really hit me was
how she said the current feminist movement was such a white
middle-class women's thing. and all this feminist theory assumes
that all feminists are literate. but there are people out there
who can't READ about feminism and READ about the systems of
oppression that are stifling them in their everyday lives. what
use is theory if it's not put into action? feminists don't have
to have a college education to be feminists! and that's what
really made me think... we're being too exclusive. it's like
some fuckin' fancy club where if you are not like them, you're
not in: 'you're black, get the hell out.' 'you're asian, you
don't belong here.' 'you're a man, you know nothing about what
we want.' 'you're just a poor bitch, what the hell do you know
about feminism?' 'you're too young to know what feminism is
about.'
no wonder people who are not white, middle-class, literate, and
women are intimidated to join the feminist movement or even
identify themselves as feminists. what kind of movement wants to
cut off its own potential support line? feminism should be a
struggle that EVERYONE in this world should support and
contribute to. that's the only way to do it. what good is a
"radical movement to overthrow the patriarchy" when only half (or
maybe much less) of the human race is working for it? i'm
referring to the need for everyone, men AND women, to help bring
about radical revolution.
why men, you ask? i mean, they are the ones who perpetuate
patriarchy and dominate society... yes, the system of patriarchy
gives men infinite advantages and benefits, but they are hurt by
it just as well. again, non-white men suffer from the system of
patriarchy that legitimizes racism as well as sexism. and women
live in a world with men; they interact in their everyday lives.
they are their mothers, sisters, co-workers, etc. and to see the
women they care about, etc. hurt by sexism hurts them. of
course, men are much less affected by sexism than women, but
their lives could only be much better if sexism was eradicated,
along with all the other systems of oppression.
so redefine the words and struggle to radically eradicate all
systems of oppression! let's draw our power from ALL people, of
all races, of all classes, of all sexes, of all ethnicity, of all
sexual preference, of all literacy levels, of all ages..., and
combine these powers to bring about the revolution to totally
destroy the patriarchy that oppresses us all!

Blue M&M: Skittles Wannabe, or the Punk M&M?
But I won't do that...
haw flakes (pg 3)
i love these compressed discs of fruit. i suppose
it's the chinese version of fruit-roll-ups. except
that haw flakes aren't as sticky as fruit-roll-ups.
and they are easier to carry around, due to their
compact size. and they are much much cheaper. and i
think, tastier. and they come in just one flavor, haw
flavor. no need to deal with choosing what flavor you
want. no weird cut-out shapes of batman. carry a
couple of haw flakes with you at all times and chew on
them whenever your mouth gets bored. and fuck fruit-
roll-ups, one of the stupidest inventions ever--
compressing artificially flavored sticky stuff and
rolling them up in wax paper... whoever came up with
the idea must have been a hippie. and why the hell do
they cost so much? haw flakes are the cheap
alternatives to this problem. amen. warning: these
little things do get addictive... (thanks to isabel
for getting me hooked on these.)
wisdom teeth (pg 4)
what's the point of the wisdom teeth anyway? and why
the hell can't it come out nicely without hurting the
other teeth? i guess it all has to do with growing
up. my mouth sure the hell is growing up faster than
i am. i don't feel any older by having four more
teeth than other people. but older people lose teeth
when they get to a certain age. depending on how well
they took care of their teeth. i think i should start
flossing. i always had something against flossing,
cos everytime i do it, my gums bleed like crazy. and
i wonder if after a zillion flosses, the space between
your teeth increases. that can't be good noews. but
i guess some people just like to have a clean mouth.
album reviews (pgs 5, 6, 7, and 12 )
Disclaimer: These reviews may offend some readers. Don't complain
that I like most of these albums; I usually only get stuff that I
know are good. If you send me something to review, then maybe I'll
give more interesting reviews... Enjoy! (These are 1995 albums or
things I bought this year...)

a panacea to answer the unasked question
a vacuum violence can be seen
far in the mute offset distance
where scale is as shallow as this mind
this knowledge drags along
pulling with force unbearable
that breaks this pure wrinkled body
the sights become dim
and the grind seems to fade away
to some melting distance untouched

pathos,
a wretched absorbance
with mouth like a desert
takes everything away from me
as he radiates unlimited tears
from his clouded plastic eye
as it tries to focus on a blur
and then a strand of bare rain
pierces his glowing metallic head.
-he will pierce my body,
